Cuong Tran Takes Down GUKPT London

Date JULY 27 2022
Vietnam-born, London resident Cuong Tran took down the third leg of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour in London after beating a 318-strong field including an extremely tough final table . Tran’s ultimate obstacle in the way of the £127,800 first prize was former Irish Open champion Neil Channing , but two vital hands went Tran’s way and last year’s fifth place finisher became this year’s victor. The chip counts threehanded were: Cuong Tran 545,000 Neil Channing 1,495,000 Leon Bui 2,715,000 Channing doubled up Tran but slowly got the better of Bui and took over the chip lead. Channing eventually knocked Bui out leaving himself and Tran heads up. With two players remaining it didn’t take very long for a winner to be crowned despite the fact Channing had a 2-1 chip lead. First, Tran hit a straight just when Channing made a set, leaving the British pro with 800,000 while Tran stacked 4 million in chips. Then in the final hand, Tran raised enough to put Channing all in and Channing made the call. He flipped over pocket nines while Tran revealed 10-7. Things looked rosey for Channing on the 8-3-3 flop, but the turn was a 10 putting Tran ahead, and the river was a useless 4. Channing left the £1,500 buy-in event with £84,700 for second place, and Cuong Tran took home £127,800 for first. The final table payouts were: First Cuong Tran £127,800 Second Neil Channing £84,700 Third Leon Bui £56,000 Fourth Rumit Somaiya £33,400 Fifth Steven Ducharme £25,300 Sixth Salman Behbhani £20,500 Seventh Michael McCool £15,700 Eighth Darren Annis £11,900 Ninth Victoria Coren £9,100 Tenth Laurence Houghton £6,700 Martin Silke won this event last year, beating 397 other players to take home the £172,850 top prize. The tour’s next stop is the G Casino, Bury New Road in Manchester. This kicks off on Apr. 17 and will run until Apr. 25. Until then the second round of GUKPT Club Championship tournaments (a series of £200 freezeouts) takes place on Apr. 10 at the G casinos in Bolton and Dundee and the Grosvenor casinos in Stoke and Southampton.
