European Poker Tour Deauville -- Day 4
Article ID 00043148
Author Rebecca McAdam
Date JULY 27 2022
Day 4 of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Deauville in the Casino Barriere saw 24 players return from an original field of 768, with 16 more to lose before end of play. Lots of big names were in the lineup for the €847,000 first prize, including Bertrand Grospellier , Freddy Deeb (pictured right) , Peter Eastgate , and Mike McDonald , yet not all of them would get to play for the higher end of the €3,686,400 prize pool. Former psychology student Jake Cody did well throughout the day at his first ever EPT event — largely helped on his way by Hugo Lemaire. In one big hand earlier on, Lemaire raised 70,000, and Cody three-bet to 193,000. Lemaire fired again, this time to 410,000, prompting Cody to ask him how much he had left behind. 1.3 million was the answer, and after a pensive moment, Cody moved all in, followed by an insta-call from Lemaire. Both stacks were similarly sized, and the pot was worth around 3.5 million. Astoundingly, Cody revealed 10 4 , while Lemaire displayed K K . The board fell 6 5 3 A 7 , and as that last card fell, Cody made his straight and it was all over for Lemaire. He left in 18th place for €18,400. Two well-known names to hit the rail throughout the day were Frenchman Bruno Fitoussi and American Freddy Deeb. Fitoussi’s jacks were beaten by Craig Bergeron’s 8 5 after Bergeron made his flush on the river. Fitoussi hit the rail in 14th place, taking home €28,000. Deeb shoved for his last 210,000 from early position and found a caller in Stephane Albertini. Deeb revealed A 8 and Albertini tabled 7 7 . The sevens held, and Deeb made his exit in 12th place for €35,000. Alexia Portal (pictured left) made it all the way to 10th place, so close but yet so far from what would be her first final-table appearance. She also left at the hands of Stephane Albertini. Albertini bet 105,000, Portal moved in for 450,000, and after some thought, Albertini made the call showing pocket fives to Portal’s A-J. His fives held, and Portal received €51,500 for her efforts. After Portal’s exit, there was only going to be one more casualty. Eastgate was short, but he managed to stay alive, and in the end it was French poker great Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier who was the final-table bubble boy. The chip leader going into the day, Teodor Caraba, closed day 4 as leader once again, when Grospellier’s A-Q ran head-first into his pocket aces. ElkY received €51,500 for ninth place. Two Romanians will be seated at the final table. Seat 1 holds the first, Claudiu Secara, with 795,000 in chips. The 35-year-old’s best result so far was his 12th-place finish at EPT Prague in December for €31,400. Next to him in seat 2 is Jake “neverbluff67” Cody. This 21-year-old Brit is doing well with 4,650,000 in chips. Seat 3 holds Frenchman Michael “Fratton” Fratty with his 1,595,000 in chips. The 34-year-old has made a whopping come back as at one point he was down to just three big blinds. Romanian Teodor Caraba, the 21-year-old chip leader, takes seat 4 with 6,915,000 in chips. He won his Deauville seat in a PokerStars $530 satellite a few weeks ago. Next to him in seat 5 is someone who needs no introduction — former world champion Peter Eastgate (pictured right) . At just 24, including this event, the great Dane has made two final tables and has reached the money five times on the EPT . The Team PokerStars Pro player has an ordeal ahead of him, however, as he is the short stack with 695,000 in chips. Next in seat 6 is Craig “HU4ROLLZ” Bergeron — the first of two 20-year-olds at the final table. The young American is more known for his online poker activity than his live. He qualified for the event on PokerStars via a $22 rebuy satellite and starts day 5 quite comfortably with 3,135,000 in chips. With slightly more, Seat 7’s Stephane Albertini, a 28-year-old from Corsica, has 3,555,000 in chips and is more used to taking part in high stakes cash games when he attends the EPT . However, he has played a good few EPT main events, and without a cash is surely hungry for his first. Last but not least in seat 8 is Mike “Timex” McDonald. The second 20-year-old of the final table qualified on PokerStars also, and now sits with 1,815,000 in chips. McDonald became the youngest EPT champion at 18 when he won the main event in Dortmund. The Canadian now has the chance to win a second EPT title, and in doing so, would become the first to win two. This is his third EPT final table. Check back here tomorrow to find out who out of the final eight is crowned EPT Deauville champion.
