The 2010 Aussie Millions Poker Championship kicked off last week at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, with its first event, a $1,000 + $100 AUD buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament. This opening event hopefully sets the tone for the 19 more tournaments to come as it attracted a record field of 1,143 players, in turn creating a prize pool of $1.1 million AUD . This is now the largest live poker event to be ever held in Australia. As the poker festival progressed, Australians were the nationality topping the charts, that is until event no. 4, the $1,000 + $100 AUD buy-in, two-day, pot-limit Omaha event. Well-known faces turned out in droves, but the person who outshone 159 other players including Michael Sampieri , Tony Bloom , and Sorel Mizzi was the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe winner, Annette Obrestad . Obrestad began the final table third in chips but soon became chip leader with the elimination of Tony Bloom. Her final opponent was Billy Seri, but the heads up only lasted three hands before she was crowned champion. The Norwegian Betfair pro takes home $40,000 AUD plus her first Aussie Millions Championship ring. Day 1, flight 1 of the $10,000 + $500 buy-in main event starts on Sunday, Jan. 24.
