2009 WSOP Final Table Ratings Slightly Down from 2008

The 2009 World Series of Poker main-event final table may have had Phil Ivey, but it didn’t have more viewers than the 2008 finale. The conclusion of the 2009 WSOP on ESPN on Tuesday garnered a 1.8 household rating, down slightly from the 1.9 rating the 2008 WSOP earned. Both final-table episodes, the first two since Harrah’s decided to delay the playing of the final table nearly four months so that viewers would not know who won as they watched the initial broadcasts, attracted more viewers than 2007. More than 2.1 million viewers watched Joe Cada become the youngest WSOP main-event champion in history. While the finale ratings may be disappointing to ESPN and those in the industry who expected the appearance of Ivey to attract new viewers, the network and Harrah’s can take solace in the fact that the averages for households and viewership increased by nine and seven percent, respectively, over 2008. The 2009 WSOP season also saw an increase in the male 25-54 demographic by 13 percent compared to 2008.
