Here is a quick overview of the Card Player Player of the Year ramifications that happened this week. Jason Mercier continued his impressive 2009 and used a fourth-place finish at the WSOP Europe main event to climb the standings. He was awarded 990 points at WSOP Europe , which grew his total to 3,171. Just four days later, Mercier made another score when he won a no-limit hold’em preliminary event at the PokerStars European Poker Tour London festival of poker. Mercier was awarded an additional 540 points and he jumped into fourth position on the leader board with 3,711 points overall. It was the eighth time in 2009 that Mercier scored POY points. His largest single score before London came when he won event No. 5 ($1,500 pot-limit Omaha) at the WSOP and took home 960 points. Erik Cajelais continued a strong stretch of poker in London by finishing runner-up at the EPT London high-roller event. Cajelais was awarded 480 points, which brings his total to 1,056 for the year. Cajelais previously won Event No. 2 at WSOP Europe and was awarded 576 points along with his first gold bracelet. Matt Glantz won the high-roller event to capture 576 points and grow his 2009 total to 1,070. Glantz has quietly put together an impressive show of consistency in 2009 at the largest events in poker. He has cashed in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure , the World Poker Tour Championship , and the $40,000 no-limit hold’em event at the WSOP , as well as two cashes in $10,000 world championship events at the WSOP . The largest winner at EPT London was the champion of the no-limit hold’em main event, Aaron Gustavson. He was awarded 1,920 points and $1,354,042 in prize money for defeating former world champion Peter Eastgate heads-up for the title. Gustavson climbed to 35th place (2,358) in the rankings with the win, but Eastgate climbed even higher. Eastgate is now perched at 14th place in the standings with 2,896 points total. Eastgate’s other large score came early in 2009, when he won a preliminary no-limit hold’em event at the PCA and took home 1,296 points. Even with the abundance of movement that took place in London during the past few weeks, everyone is still chasing the one man at the top, Yevgeniy Timoshenko. The current leader had a fair showing in London as well; he added to his lead by cashing in 25th place at the WSOP Europe main event, adding 50 points and $40,929 to his already impressive 2009 totals. Timoshenko now holds 5,463 points and he has won $3,944,513. Both amounts lead all poker players in 2009.
