Date JULY 27 2022
The two starting-day fields of the World Series of Poker Europe main event (sponsored by Betfair) saw 178 players whittled down to 92. Despite this, there is a fantastic line-up for day 3, including Card Player’s own CEO Barry Shulman (111,200) [pictured right] , John Tabatabai (160,100), Ram Vaswani (202,500), Yevgeniy Timoshenko (192,100), Antonio Esfandiari (173,300), Jani Vilmunen (65,500), Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott (174,000), Liz Lieu (184,400), and footballer Teddy Sheringham (74,800). James Akenhead is also holding strong in the top 20 stacks, with 178,000. Plus, former champions Annette Obrestad (90,500) and John Juanda (38,900) are still in with a shot as they now prepare for day 3, which starts at noon ( GMT + 1) today. If that doesn’t get the mouth watering, here are the top 10 in chips after day 2 : Ian Munns — 528,300 Praz Bansi — 299,000 Oyvind Riisem — 255,300 Arron Eric Filippi — 216,500 David Docherty — 216,200 Doyle Brunson — 210,900 Shandoi Demjan — 209,000 Markus Ristola — 205,000 Ram Vaswani — 202,500 Jason Mercier — 202,300 To get to this point, the field had to lose some key players. The long list of casualties included Ashton Griffin , Howard Lederer , Erik Seidel , Phil Hellmuth , David Williams, Mike Matusow , Daniel Alaei , Barry Greenstein , Mike Matusow , Shaun Deeb , Michael Tureniec , and Alex Kravchenko. Here are some notable bustouts: Phil Hellmuth [pictured left] busted at the hands of Antonio Esfandiari. According to “The Magician,” he raised with Q-J, bet 3,600 on a Q-10-8 flop, checked the 10 on the turn, and pushed the 10 on the river. Hellmuth check-called him down with what was said to be an 8. Hellmuth then unhappily made his exit. Scott Montgomery was all in with 7 7 versus Jussi Nevanlinna’s A K , but it wasn’t to be as the board fell K 5 3 6 Q . Moments after doubling up, Christer Johansson was on a spiral downwards, which ended on the other side of the rail. He, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, and Sandor Demjan saw an A 5 2 flop. Demjan checked, Timoshenko bet 3,600, and before Johansson could act, Demjan tried to call. Johansson called, Demjan’s chips stayed in the pot, and the turn was the K . Demjan checked again, as did Timoshenko, and Johansson bet 6,800, with a mere 15,000 behind. Demjan folded, and Timoshenko moved all in. Johansson insta-called and showed A K for two pair, but Timoshenko revealed 5 5 for a set of fives. The 9 river proved fruitless for Johansson, and the 2009 Irish Open champion hit the rail. EPT Dortmund champ Sandra Naujoks moved all in with 7 7 , but they weren’t very lucky as Jussi Nevanlinna called with K K , and no 7 appeared on an a board of 6 6 3 2 A . Another champion hit the rail with the money bubble sparkling somewhere in the distance. Players return at noon (local time) for level 11 and blinds of 800-1,600 with a 200 ante. The money bubble is sure to burst today, as 92 players attempt to become one of 36, and preferably one near the top end of the money ladder.
