“From 1995, I’ve played high limit. I’ve never played in a tougher game than this one.” — Eli Elezra For the past two weeks, Poker After Dark ran brand-new episodes that featured a stacked, six-handed table of cash-game experts on NBC , and viewers were riveted. By the end of the two weeks, the players had upped the stakes from $200-$400 to $500-$1,000. Like all PAD episodes, viewers tune in on weeknights at 2:05 a.m. ET, and for those who miss the week’s action, a special “Director’s Cut” edition airs after Saturday Night Live at 1 a.m. ET. In that episode, the players give their insight on the biggest hands of the week. Review of the Hand: Game: Game: No-limit hold’em Stakes: $500-$1,000 Ante: $200 Lineup: Howard Lederer Phil Ivey Patrik Antonius — Button Ilari Sahamies — Small blind $500 Eli Elezra (sitting out) Tom Dwan — Big blind $1,000 Preflop Action: Patrick Antonius raises to $4,000 with K Q . Sahamies calls with 7 6 from the small blind, and Dwan calls with A 2 from the big blind. The pot is now $13,000. Tom Dwan: I had a hand where I can either reraise or call. Folding is not really an option with the A-2 of spades. I chose to call, partly because I just lost a few big pots. And I don’t think it’s a good hand to reraise with after just having lost a few big pots. I’d rather have a 7-6 suited or a good hand. Flop Action Begins: The flop comes Q 6 2 . Sahamies checks, Dwan checks, and Antonius bets $9,000. Sahamies check-raises to $27,000. TD: Ilari is going to be weak here more than most players. He’s going to check-raise most of his strong hands also, so obviously he can have a strong hand here plenty of the time, but I had one of the perfect hands to bluff with, because I definitely can’t call, yet my hand has decent value where I can check-raise, and a hand like K-Q or K-6 could call me and I still have a decent number of outs. So, I chose to put in the third raise. Flop Action Continues: Dwan three-bets to $55,800. Antonius folds, and Sahamies pauses, then calls. The pot is now $133,600. TD: Ilari made a really surprisingly good call with just middle pair. I don’t know what to say other than it was a very good call. If other players had made it, I might say it was a bad call that got lucky, but as was evidenced by how long he thought and the fact the he’s a very good player and a very smart guy, he definitely had some reasoning behind the call other than, “Oh I hope Tom doesn’t have it this time.” Turn and River Action: The turn is the 10 . Sahamies checked, and Dwan checked. The river is the 4 . Both players check. The board now reads Q 6 2 10 4 . Sahamies wins the $133,600 pot with a pair of sixes. Ilari Sahamies: If Tom bet on the turn, I think I would have folded it, but I was lucky because he didn’t bet. TD: I was extremely close to betting the turn, and in hindsight I should have. But unfortunately I chose not to, and he ended up winning the pot. PAD is continuing to air new episodes, and this week, “ The Magnificent Six ” is being featured in the classic winner-take-all tournament format.
