Jeff Shulman Eliminated from the WSOP in Fifth Place

Pocket sevens derailed Jeff Shulman’s main-event bid in 2000 , and it finished him off here in 2009 , as well. Nine years later, in his second World Series of Poker main-event final table of the decade, Shulman finished two spots better. After losing a race to Antoine Saout, Shulman was eliminated in fifth place. But instead of making $146,700 like he did in 2000 for his seventh-place finish, he made $1.95 million this time around. “I play differently than most people, but I like how I played,” said Shulman. “I don’t regret anything I did.” Shulman got into some sticky situations throughout the night, where he made several what-appeared-to-be-tough laydowns. He got very unlucky with pocket jacks after 21-year-old pro Joe Cada pushed all in with pocket threes as a short stack and then spiked a 3 on the flop for another bad beat in a day filled with them. Still, Shulman shrugged off that hand in an interview after his elimination. “I was really pulling for any paint on the river just so he could have a sweat,” said Shulman. “It’s poker. Everyone’s done it.” The president of Card Player said that he would probably watch Tuesday’s broadcast of the main event with his wife and kids to “have a chuckle about it.” When asked if he was disappointed that he came up short, he looked at the payout for fifth place — which was nearly $2 million — and replied, “How could you not be pleased with it?” Watch Shulman’s interview with Card Player TV after his elimination:
