The 2010 Aussie Millions began on Thursday, Jan. 14 at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, with a $1,100 AUD buy-in no-limit hold’em event. The first tournament of the popular series attracted a large field of 1,143 entrants and generated a prize pool worth $1.1 million AUD . It set a record as the largest live poker tournament in Australian poker history. This was an encouraging start for the tournament series, which will feature a total of 20 poker tournaments between now and Jan. 31. The $10,000 no-limit hold’em main event will run from Jan. 24-30. Card Player will feature daily news recaps for the main event and other big events that will be taking place in the land down under during the next few weeks. Other events that will feature news recaps include the $100,000 no-limit hold’em challenge, the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, and the $10,000 pot-limit Omaha event (new tournament for 2010). Last year, the Aussie Millions main event attracted a field of 681 players and created a prize pool worth $4,552,130. The eventual champion was Stewart Scott (pictured above right) , who was awarded the top prize worth $1,381,392. Scott defeated poker professional Peter Rho heads up in the final match, and other top players he had to defeat at the final table included rising star Elliot Smith and veteran Barny Boatman . David Steicke won the $100,000 no-limit hold’em challenge in 2009, and Alexander Kostritsyn won the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. event.
