Poker Tournament Organiser Cleared Of Assault

Date JULY 27 2022
According to UK news site, News & Star, poker tournament organiser, Ken Johnston, has been cleared of assaulting one of the players at a charity event he hosted to help him raise money for his Mount Kilimanjaro charity climb. The player making the claim, Steven Nicholls, stated that he was punched seven times on the head, knocked off his chair, and kicked for being too successful and winning too much money at the Casino Royale fundraiser last August. Despite claiming the attack lasted 10 minutes and only ended when others pulled Johnston away, the accused’s barrister Charlotte Atherton said it was odd that no-one else could support Nicholls’ story. She also said it was strange that after the incident, Nicholls did not seek help at the hotel but instead calmly walked to a friend’s house. Johnston, boss of poker event company, Northern Poker Stars, was found not guilty of causing actual bodily harm after a three-day trial. He told the jury the incident did not happen and that Nicholls’ injuries were not caused by him. Johnston, who is a former army physical training instructor, is one of 24 Cumbrians raising money for the climb as part of Cumbrian radio station, CFM ’s Cash For Kids campaign.
